Sarah Ann Pallister was the first child of Joseph Thompson Pallister and Ann Allisson, born Ornsby Hill, Lanchester & christened June 29th, 1862 at All Saints, Lanchester.
In 1871 Sarah Ann was at home with her parents at Ornsby Hill, Lanchester, where her father was a mason. Two younger sisters and a younger brother were also at home.
By 1881 the family had moved to Annfield Plain, Kyo near Lanchester and Sarah Ann was still living at home and working as a dressmaker.
In Oct-December 1882 Sarah Ann married John Bullerwell at Lanchester. John was born August 3rd, 1861 at Hare Law, Annfield Plain Co. Durham, the son of Ann and James Middleton Bullerwell, a coke burner.
In 1891 Sarah and John were living at Pontop Rows, Annfield Plain and John was working as a mason. They had a six year old son James T.
John and Sarah were living at Catchgate, Kyo in 1901 and John was still a mason. Son James was working as a grocer’s apprentice and they now had an 8 year old daughter, Ellen M. Boarding with them at this time was Sarah’s sister, Frances Pallister (20), a general domestic servant, and her brother Jamie Pallister (17), a railway engine cleaner.
John was still working as a mason (to miller) in 1911 and he and Sarah were living at 8 Victoria Terrace, Annfield Plain, Kyo. Daughter Ellen May was still at home. Son James (a grocer’s cartman for Walter Wilsons) had married Isabell Atkinson and they, along with their eight month old daughter Ellen May, were living with Isabell’s parents at Oxhill, Stanley.
Son James’ wife Isabell died in Oct-December 1926 & James married again in Jan-March 1928 in Lanchester. His second wife was Margaret H Carroll. James & Margaret & family were living at 26 South View, Stanley, Co Durham at the time of the 1939 register & James was a general dealer manager.
Sarah Ann died in 1936, aged 76 & was buried on December 23rd, 1936 at St John the Evangelist, Kirk Merrington, Sedgefield.
The 1939 register shows widowed John living with daughter Ellen & her husband Edmund Cowperthwaite, & their son at 1 Deanbank Terrace, Sedgefield. Edmund was described as an electric washer with his own account.
